About this check

clauses, worked example and questions

Checks a rectangular solid-timber or glulam bar in axial compression at the ultimate limit state, to SIA 265:2021: buckling about both axes and the resistance of the cross-section. Every step shows its formula and the clause it comes from.

What it checks

What you enter and what you get

You enter the member (wood type, strength class, load duration, service class, b, h), the design compressive strength fc,0,d and the characteristic values fc,0,k and E0,05 from your copy of SIA 265, the role of the member, the design compressive force Nd, the buckling lengths about both axes (directly, or from the member length and end conditions), and any loss of section.

You get every intermediate value with its clause, the utilisation of each check with a pass or fail, and figures. With the Basic plan, it prints as an A4 calculation note.

Assumptions and limits

Worked example

A glulam column GL24h, b × h = 120 × 240 mm, in service class 1, with a design compressive force of 245 kN and buckling lengths of 5.20 m about y-y and 2.60 m about z-z. These are the module's own results for its worked example, computed when this page was built.

How this module is verified

Verified clause by clause against SIA 265:2021 and against independent calculations used on real projects, before release.

Questions

Which axis governs?

The one with the larger slenderness. The module computes both and checks buckling about the governing axis; in the worked example both slendernesses are equal.

Why is E_0,05 not reduced for moisture?

SIA 265 clause 4.2.8.4 forms the relative slenderness from the characteristic values, so E0,05 is entered as the characteristic value.

Can I print the calculation?

The full calculation is shown on screen, free and without an account. A print-ready A4 calculation note is part of the Basic plan.
