The code governs which inputs appear and how every value is derived.

Material properties, shared by every verification. The cross-section is not shared: SIA 263 classifies it from the internal forces, so it belongs to each verification and appears with it.

About this check

clauses, worked example and questions

Checks a solid rectangular steel bar under a moment about its major or minor axis and an axial force in compression or tension, to SIA 263:2013: the plastic section, flexural buckling, lateral-torsional buckling and their interaction. Every step shows its formula and the clause it comes from.

What it checks

What you enter and what you get

You enter fy,k from table 1 of your copy of SIA 263, for the grade and the plate thickness, E and G (clause 2.2), the axis of bending, the width b and depth h, γM1 (clause 4.1.3), the sense and magnitude of NEd, the largest moment MEd in the plane of bending, the moment diagram with Mmin and the signs of the end moments. For the member: the buckling lengths, entered or derived from the length l, the end conditions and the intermediate supports ny and nz in each plane. For lateral-torsional buckling, prevented by construction measures or checked: lD, the moment diagram between the lateral supports and the point of load application.

You get the section values, the buckling and lateral-torsional buckling resistances and the utilisation of each check with a pass or fail. With the Basic plan, it prints as an A4 calculation note.

Assumptions and limits

Worked example

A bar b × h = 40 × 200 mm in fy,k = 235 N/mm², bent about its major axis, under a compression NEd = 150 kN and end moments of 25 and 10 kNm of the same sign, 2,000 mm long and pinned at both ends in both planes, with lateral supports 2,000 mm apart, the moment diagram M and M/2 for lateral-torsional buckling and the load at the centroid. These are the module's own results for its worked example, computed when this page was built.

How this module is verified

Verified clause by clause against SIA 263:2013 and against independent calculations used on real projects, before release.

Questions

Why does the moment resistance fall with n² and not with n?

The strip taken by the axial force lies next to the neutral axis, where it contributed least to the moment. In the worked example n = 0.084 lowers Mpl,Rd from 89.5 to 88.9 kNm.

Why is lateral-torsional buckling checked separately?

The interaction uses MD,Rd,min, the resistance under a uniform moment, and does not reduce to the bending check when NEd is zero. So MEd ≤ MD,Rd with the actual diagram is checked on its own.

Can I print the calculation?

The full calculation is shown on screen, free and without an account. A print-ready A4 calculation note is part of the Basic plan.
